ACL weekend is on the horizon. Ready with what to pack, how to get there, and where to recharge after the last set?

At Paseo, we know festival weekends, from the rush of Zilker to the calm of Austin after the crowd clears.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to get to Zilker with less hassle, what to pack (and skip) and the best local spots to recharge nearby, including some just steps from our front door.

How to Get to ACL

Zilker Park is right in the heart of downtown Austin, but getting there can feel like the hardest set of the weekend. Here’s how to make your entrance smoother:

  • ACL Shuttles: Free shuttles run from Republic Square downtown – one of the easiest ways in.
  • Rideshare Tips: Drop zones get crowded; ask to be dropped a few blocks away to avoid the chaos.
  • CapMetro: Download the CapMetro app for real-time bus info.

If you’re close by, scooters and MetroBikes are the fastest way in, especially if you’re coming from nearby apartments like Paseo. Driving is an option, but expect traffic, paid parking and a walk from your spot.

When to Head In: Arrive early on Friday to breeze through security.

Heading out after a headliner? Walk a few blocks before calling a ride to save time.

What to Bring to ACL

You’re in for long days, loud sets and unpredictable weather. A few smart essentials and you’re good to go.

6 Must-Have Items:

  • Clear bag or belt bag (ACL guideline–approved)
  • Refillable water bottle (empty at entry)
  • Portable charger
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, hat
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Light jacket or blanket for night

Austinites swear by a bandana for dust and a blanket for late-night sets.

Easy mistakes to avoid: Don’t wear anything you’d be upset to ruin. Zilker gets dusty (and muddy if it rains).

What Not to Bring to ACL

It’s tempting to bring it all, but security will slow you down.

Skip These to Save the Hassle:

  • Outside food/drinks
  • Professional cameras
  • Umbrellas, chairs or hammocks
  • Pets (only service animals allowed)
  • Selfie sticks, coolers, carts

Check ACL’s official prohibited list before you go. It changes slightly each year.

Local ACL Tips You’ll Wish You Knew Sooner

  • Don’t try to see everyone – overlaps will happen. Pick your must-sees and let the rest go.
  • Set a meet-up point with friends. Batteries always run low.
  • Stay hydrated. Every year someone misses Sunday because they forgot this one.
  • Know your exits. Leaving right after a headliner is wild. Walk a few blocks before calling a ride.

When the last set ends and the crowd spills out of Zilker, you’ll want an easy plan for food and drinks nearby. Skip the long waits downtown and head for spots locals actually hit after the fest:

  • Chuy’s – Iconic Tex-Mex, strong margaritas, no judgment if you’re still in festival gear
  • Terry Black’s Barbecue – BBQ and comfort food, laid-back and close to Zilker

Lake Austin Exit Hangouts

  • Tumble 22 – Nashville hot chicken, quick service, easy seating
  • Pool Burger – Tiki drinks and burgers just steps from the park
  • Maudie’s – Tex-Mex favorite with frozen margs and hearty plates

Downtown, Rainey & East Austin Nightcaps

  • The Roosevelt Room – Classic cocktail bar with an award-winning menu and upscale vibe
  • Péché – French-inspired cocktail lounge with absinthe specialties and late-night small plates
  • Garage – Hidden cocktail bar tucked inside a parking garage, known for creative drinks and intimate vibes
  • Victory Lap Rainey – Sports bar energy with frozen drinks, plenty of outdoor space and pizza courtesy of Side Piece Pies
  • Half Step – Craft cocktails in a bungalow setting, right on Rainey
  • Lucille Patio Lounge – Casual backyard feel with DJs and late-night energy
  • Parlor Room – Easygoing, unfussy, good for a low-key wind-down
  • Whisler’s – Local favorite on East 6th with craft cocktails and a big patio
  • DeNada Cantina – Colorful East Austin cantina with strong margaritas, mezcal cocktails, and a lively late-night scene
